„Tribuna” din Sibiu

  • Subiect: “The Tribune” from Sibiu The foundation of „The Tribun" magazine on 26 April 1884 was the most important event at the end of the l9th century, alongside with the unification of the Romanian National Party from Transylvania, Banat, and the Hungarian County and the dissemination of the „Memorandum" in 1892. The question of issuing a daily newspaper in Sibiu had been raised since the Student's Congress in Putna, in 1871. The newspaper was to be led by Ioan Slavici, with the purpose of increasing the cultural level of the population, destroying Latinism and providing cultural unity and, subsequently, national unity. This newspaper was considered to be of vital importance in presenting objectively the attitude of the National Romanian Party and defending Romania's national interests. The newspaper promoted a policy in support of the defence against the Hungarian government oppression, since it was issued at a difficult moment for our country which was part of Hungary, and not a member of an Austrian - Hungarian Confederation.
