Studiu privind populaţiile de popândăi (Spermophilus Citellus) din zona Însurăţei, Judeţul Brăila

  • Subiect: We monitored European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) populations in a pasture area near Însurăţei town, Brăila County, Romania. The study area includes approximately 26 Km2 of the „Valea Călmăţuiului", a Natura 2000 Site, along the Călmăţui River. Colonies were found in 3 parts of the study site, on a total of 0,08 km2 surfaces, typically in dry, rising grounds. In the field a high number of dogs was observed, which represent a high predation pressure for the European ground squirrels. Our findings suggest that the abundance decreased over the last years most likely due to predation and habitat degradation.
