Some Observations on the Final History Examination

  • TITLU în română: Câteva observaţii asupra examenului de bacalaureat la istorie
  • Subiect: This article presents a few observntions regarding the final History examination wich the students have to sustain after finishing the 12th grade. One conclusion is that the study of History in Romania does not get the full support from the authorities, the number of hours is too small and the textbooks are flooded with irrelevant numbers. The best solution would be the increasing of the number of History hours to at least two hours for all students. ln present, three-quarters of Romanian high school students study no more than one hour of History every week. The structure of items for the final examination is well balanced and does not require modifications. In the same time, the History examination is somehow a trial of the Romanian language for many students, who simply could not master the basic Romanian language. The failure or the poor grades at examinations are a result of the fact that for a large number of students, the language itself used in items and questions raise difficulties for a correct understanding. Another problem is that some items in the written examination are not quite clear for both teachers and students. To avoid any confusion in the future, these questions have to be more accurate and explicite. The author of this study demonstrates that the History teacher has to put the foundation for a life long education for the present students and the future adults.
