- Subiect: Cyrene, the original capital of old Cyrenaica and one of the bigest Greek colony, was founded as Herodotus tells us by, Battus in 631 B.C., original from Thera (Santorini), itself a spartan colony. Flourishing of the city in classical period was due by trade, exporting ceriale, wine, olive oil but the main product was silphium. The plant was part of the Ombillifere family, Ferrule type which is extracted a flavored juice, used in drugs, contraception, as a spice form but mostly it was used in producing the faimous Cyrene perfume. It was exporting in bottles called aryballoy, alabastros and lekythoy in the entire Mediterranean basin, eventually became so expensive, that was asked at one point during the Battiaz monarchy, monopoly of silphium wich greatly contributed to the prosperity of the town wich was transformed from a mere into a real emporium.
