Subiect: „The Romanian visitor of Crazy Horse, South Dakota, unexpectedly
finds himself face to face with a wonderful marble bust of the great
composer George Enescu. This is the work of Korczak Ziolkowski, the
"storyteller in stone", whose gigantic monument ofChiefCrazy Horse ofthe
Oglala Sioux commands the area from the top of a granite mountain. In 1937,
when the Romanian musician toured some American cities, he briefly posed
for young Ziolkowski. They were introduced to each other by the
sculptor's first wife, herself a musician who studied under the great violinist and composer. The first version of the bust, cast in plaster, was displayed for
ten days in the window ofthe Steinway Gallery in New York. Later it was
moved Io Camegie Hall where Enescu was conducting the Philarmonic
Orchestra. The following year the bust was already carved in Carrera marble.
Displayed in the lobby of Bushnell Memorial it honored George Enescu' s
presence as special guest of the Musical Club of Hartford, Connecticut. In the
same year, Ziolkowski was asked by the Romanian officials to exhibit this work on the Romanian section of the 1939 New York World Fair. On that occasion,
the marble portrait of George Enescu was unanimously appreciated and its
author was acclaimed as a master ofhis art.”
